Goalkeeper Lee Axworthy re-signs for the Kingdom

Goalkeeper Lee Axworthy re-signs for the Kingdom ahead of the 2024 season.

Kerry FC can confirm that goalkeeper Lee Axworthy has re-signed for the club in a deal which will keep him in Mounthawk Park for the 2024 SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division campaign.

Axworthy, an Irish national, made the move to the Kingdom during the summer transfer window in 2023. Originally born in Dublin, Lee lived in the Kingdom until he was 6 and went to primary school in Milltown. Lee’s aunty lives in Lispole and his grandparents are from Milltown, so Kerry roots are strong with our new goalkeeper who often visited the southwest in off-season breaks. Lee’s football career began in St Albans City before joining Brentford U19’s at the age of 16 before going on to the Brentford B team set up training alongside the main team. Lee made multiple appearances at U23 level facing the likes of West Brom and Oxford United.

The 22-year-old went on to make 12 appearances for the club across the league and cup campaigns, keeping 2 clean sheets during the club’s first season in the League of Ireland. He made some important saves in the club’s bid for points in the league and was instrumental in our home win against Ringmahon Rangers in the Sports Direct FAI Cup.

Speaking following his re-signing, Axworthy said “It means a lot to be back playing for the Kingdom again in 2024. I’ve been putting in a lot of work during the off-season like all of the boys to make sure we come back firing ahead of the opening game. I’ve got an exciting feeling about this Kerry team and I can’t wait to get the place rocking again! Can’t wait to see you all back in Mounthawk Park soon.

Also speaking following his signing, First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy said “We are delighted to have Lee on board for 2024. He was a great addition to the group when he signed in the summer window. He had some brilliant performances towards the end of the season and made some crucial saves in big games for us. It will be great to have Lee from day one this season and I know he’s really looking forward to getting back on the pitch.”
