Matchday 20 – Cobh Ramblers v Kerry FC

Monday Night Football seems to love this Kerry v Cork matchup, this being the second meeting of the sides on the abnormal Monday evening, having already met on Easter Monday this year.

Well, what a whack of confidence the Kerry team can take into this one. After almost 2 and ½ seasons of late goals against the Kingdom, Kerry got the cream on Friday night against Bray Wanderers with an 87th-minute winner from the most unlikely of scorers. Big centre back Abel Alabi came on up front just 90 seconds earlier, and having won the corner himself, he nodded home the set piece to send the Mounthawk faithful into jubilation. Adding to the occasion, the Kingdom won their 100th competitive game, and it was their first ever win over Bray Wanderers on the 11th time of asking.

But full focus now turns to the week ahead. An away trip to Wexford on the horizon on Friday, Kerry first turn their attention to a Cobh Ramblers side looking to close the gap on league leaders Dundalk FC in St. Colman’s Park. Cobh enjoyed a fairly convincing 3-0 away win against UCD on Friday and will be full of confidence, particularly because the league leaders could only manage a draw against Treaty United in Oriel Park. Cobh have turned their season rightly around after 3 straight defeats in early April, only dropping 4 points in 10 games since. It’s set to be a mouthwatering Monday Night Football that you won’t want to miss.

Did You Know?
It’s back-to-back Monday night fixtures against Cobh Ramblers, with the sides meeting on Easter Monday back in April. Meanwhile, Kerry captain Sean McGrath kick-started his First Division career with Cobh Ramblers, after a successful few years in Cork City’s Academy.

Injury Update
Kerry have no fresh injury concerns from Friday night’s clash against Bray Wanderers to worry about. Colin Healy mentioned that Joe Adams and Carl Mujaguzi were closer to a return and will require fitness tests to see if they can make the matchday squad for tomorrow night’s trip to Cobh.

What they said?
Colin Healy – “Defensively, we were really solid last Friday. Tim made some big saves as well, which is great. But we will need to be the exact same on Monday night, be very hard to beat. Cobh had a great win on Friday night, a really good side, and it will be a difficult game. But the players are recovering well, and we hope to travel down there and put in a good performance”.
