Kerry FC are delighted to announce the arrival of veteran goalkeeper Matthew Connor, who signs for the club from fellow First Division outfit Athlone Town for the remainder of the 2025 campaign.
Matthew, who is just 28 years of age, brings a huge wealth of League of Ireland experience to the group. The Tramore native has played some 147 games at this level since he first signed for his native Waterford United back in 2014, where he made some 25 appearances in the First Division before he departed at the end of the 2015 season. Connor then moved on to Wexford Youths in 2016, Cork City in the second half of that season, before a return to the renamed Waterford FC in 2017, making 21 appearances in a promotion-winning season. He tasted Premier Division football for the first time in 2018 & 2019, playing some 50 games combined over the two seasons. Since then, Matthew has had spells with Bray Wanderers and Galway United, and at the start of this season, he signed for Athlone Town, becoming their number 1 and making 17 appearances this year.
Matthew arrives in Mounthawk Park ahead of a crucial run of games in the league and will wear the number 16 shirt for the Kingdom.
Speaking after he arrived in Kerry, Matthew Connor said, “Delighted to get it over the line and get going this week. You can see the club have a vision for where they want to bring the club, and it’s exciting to now be a part of that project. It’s a young group, but there’s a quality coaching staff there that will be sure to get the group up to its full potential and hopefully finish the season as strong as possible.
Also speaking after his signing, Colin Healy said, “It’s great to welcome Matthew to the group here, and I’m delighted he is with us. I would have played with him a number of years ago, and I’ve known him a long time. He’s the ultimate professional and a leader on and off the pitch. He adds huge experience to the group; he has had quite the career for a man still in his twenties. I’m looking forward to seeing him in action.”
